INK A FISH

Join a Gyotaku fish printing workshop in Setúbal at Studio Bacalhau, where you’ll create a print from a real fish sourced from the historic Mercado do Livramento. In this hands-on art workshop, participants learn the traditional Japanese technique of Gyotaku, a method originally used by fishermen to record their catch. Using natural inks and simple printmaking tools, you’ll transfer the form and texture of the fish onto paper to create a unique artwork. This creative experience connects Japanese printmaking, local fishing culture, and the ecology of Setúbal and the Sado estuary, making it a memorable art activity for visitors, families, and anyone interested in craft, nature, and maritime heritage. No prior art experience is required.

Kids’ Studio

The wall behind her is covered in multicolored paint splatters and paintings. In front of her, there are numerous bottles of paint in white, black, yellow, pink, and blue, with brushes inserted in cups and containers, indicating an artistic setting.

Every evening at Studio Bacalhau in Setúbal, we host a Creative session of guided crafts, playful art techniques, and small creative projects designed to spark curiosity and imagination. These relaxed kids art workshops in Setúbal invite young makers to explore drawing, simple printmaking, collage, natural materials, and hands-on craft in a welcoming studio environment. Each session introduces a new idea or technique, encouraging creativity, experimentation, and confidence through making.

Creative Hour is ideal for children who enjoy learning through art, craft, and creative play. Whether they are trying something new for the first time or returning to build their skills, kids can join the studio community and experience the joy of making together. ARTIST RESIDENCY

At Studio Bacalhau, we begin our inquiry into Bacalhau: not only the iconic salt cod of Portugal, but as a symbol of preservation, longing, ritual, migration, and memory.

The first theme, “Salty”, invites artists to respond to the processes of drying, curing, holding, and remembering; whether personal or collective. Bacalhau is never fresh, what does it mean to carry that idea in the body, in language, or in the land?

Whether its a quiet black-and-white piece or a bold visual experimenting, each screening is a moment to gather, reflect and converse.

Meet the Artist/Instructor

Born in India and now based in Setúbal, Tinu’s work moves between art, craft, ecology, and community. She holds a Master of Fine Arts and is an award-winning artist whose practice explores storytelling through materials, place, and collective making.

Tinu is the founder of The Art Farm in Goa, India — a creative space where artists, farmers, and visitors come together to explore art, sustainable living, and cultural exchange. Over the years, she has hosted workshops and creative programs for children and adults around the world, creating environments where people of all backgrounds feel welcome to experiment, learn, and make.

At Studio Bacalhau, she continues this spirit by offering workshops that invite participants to work slowly with natural materials and local culture. From Gyotaku fish printing inspired by Setúbal’s fishing traditions to hands-on craft sessions and yoga, her approach centers on curiosity, experimentation, and the pleasure of learning through making.

Her studio welcomes locals, travelers, and families looking for a creative experience rooted in place.
